Now that Suralan has become Baronalan (more precisely Lord Sugar of Clapton), what will become of our beloved Apprentice series?
The Tories complain that Sugar’s new (Labour ordained) title makes his appearance on the show a breach of BBC
guidelines regarding impartiality, especially given that the next series could coincide with a general election.
They have a point. The slightest pro-government messages could have a big impact on voting trends. The Apprentice’s viewing figures have shot up from 3m in the first series to more than 8m during the first episode of series five.
Lord Sugar has hinted that the next run of The Apprentice, earmarked for the first part of 2010, could be his TV swansong. In an interview on the last show of series five he said he would “do one more” series. And maybe that’s it…
If so, who would replace the original Mr “You’re Fired”? Reportedly, Sir Philip Green was the Beeb’s first choice for the role but was busy trying to take over Marks & Spencer at the time.
Having snatched the ‘part’, Sugar has made it his own and a fresh tycoon with his or her own individual firing style would take some getting used to. For sure the Beeb would have to get it right first time for the series to keep going.
Sir Philip is pretty hardcore, though, and I for one can imagine him raising his finger earnestly enough to qualify for the job. Will he be offered it again? Would he take it this time? And if so will are we soon to witness another magnate life peer in five years time?
Lord Green of Oxford Street anyone?
