Would you let a bunch of children run your business for a week? Nor would The Priory Centre chief executive Andrew Forrest, normally, but this is Global Enterprise Week and anything goes.
In case you haven’t heard, Enterprise Week (17-21 November) is a celebration of all things entrepreneurial. It’s run by the Make Your Mark Campaign (itself founded by young entrepreneurs) and is composed of about a trillion business events.
One of which is Forrest’s apparently lunatic idea to allow students to become his management team. The Priority Centre is part of Great Yarmouth Community Trust and the kids will be set a series of challenges to get them thinking in business terms: sales, marketing, finance etc.
I’ve seen this sort of thing take place at the Shell Step Awards, and the results are often surprisingly good. I can picture Mr Forrest patting a student on the head and saying, “that’s a very good suggestion Kevin, well done,” then turning to his PA with a wild look in his eyes, “why aren’t you writing this down?”
Enterprise Week is particularly relevant in these gloomy economic times. Hopefully it will show the newly redundant that there is an alternative to scrabbling for a new job, and that the seeds of success are everywhere.
Even I’m getting involved, as a judge on WinWeb’s ‘Business’09 win £10,000’ competition, the winners of which will be announced at next year’s event.
